Calloo Callay

They froze my back
while I gave birth.

It was then I thought
my simple heart
would find its rest.

It was like waking up
in the two
parts air and one
part silk breast
of a dragonfly

after ten months
of elephantine
consequence.

I thought:
what bliss.

These are the tricks
your clever spirit
plays before
the bleakest brinks.

The out-of-body
experience
was next.
