Ashes

He was a Cambridge professor,
a man who stood before thought
as a reader before a book-case
gravely selecting the right volume.

Now thoughts are wisps of smoke
ashen as the library at Alexandria.
Today he gropes along the shelf
and can’t remember what a book is for.
