The Lamprey and the Lily

The Lamprey:

I’ve clung on by my teeth
but the sea has shattered me.
I’ve been dragged here upstream,
River Lily hold onto me.

Your flowers are mango yellow,
dragons swoop to drink from you,
you’ve not been bent by the current,
kings swim through your roots.

The salmon have outmanoeuvred me,
they don’t feel the heavy sea,
now the long pool calls to me.
River Lily hold on to me.

The Lily:

I will
until the flood
my darling.

I will
until the river
dries.

Bloodless,
I will,
until you ride away.
