Beyond

When we first met
five years ago
you had a wife, a child, and fame –

now she’s walked out;
the young boy’s dead;
you’re broke, and few recall your name.

Job would still praise
the God who gave
him life, and would refuse to blame

Him, or himself.
I wonder how
you’re feeling, as you face the same

appalling test
(if it’s a test)
and if by way of ducking shame

you want your day
in court, although
God warns Job off such a mug’s game

since meaning will
remain beyond
the limited conceptual frame

He gave us His works to acclaim.
